Flight across Wales have either been cancelled or diverted after a large helium baloon escaped from a Wetherspoons this morning.

The large balloon, carrying a ‘Happy 30th Grandma’ message sailed out of the window of the Wetherspoons pub in Merthyr.

An eyewitnes told WalesOnCraic:

“The balloon was massive, mun. The girl who brought it in could hardly get it through the door. One of the punters kept getting static electric shocks off of it and he was getting very angry. He opened the bi-fold window because his gammon face was getting redder and redder and the next thing we knew, the balloon had gone right out of the window and up into the sky.

“The first thing I did was put it on Facebook because that’s what you’re supposed to do and one of the guys down at the airport said he’d have to stop all the flights in case the balloon got sucked into one of the engines of a passing plane. And here we are. I’ve got a flight to Spain tomorrow so I hope it gets sorted.”

Authorities say that they may call in the RAF to shoot the balloon down as it may present a hazard to aircraft.

“We’ve got some fighter planes on standby should we need it. The guy down the pub’s also got a BB gun, just in case.”
