A dog from Trefforest has been hailed as a hero after successfully defending his owner from a dangerous rodent.

Rufus the Dog was rewarded with some treats and a stick for fearlessly chasing away the killer squirrel in his local park.

Owner Cameron Clusterphuk told WalesOnCraic:

“I was walking through the park, wondering which bench I was going to bend my girlfriend over when I saw her next when all of a sudden, there was a yuge commotion going over by the trees. I called to Rufus, as I thought he was busy taking a dump, but much to my surprise, he was haring around the park after this squirrel.

“The squirrel looked at me with killer eyes and made a beeline towards me. It looked so angry, I swear it was going to take a big chunk out of my neck. I froze with fear, unsure whether to scream like a big girl or roar like a brave man. Sadly, I did neither and before I knew it, the squirrel was ready to pounce.”

It was Rufus’s quick-thinking that saved Cameron.

“I saw my whole life flash before my very eyes but within seconds, Rufus had caught up with the squirrel and chased him away into a tree. And that was kind of that really. There’s not much else to say.”

Rufus was taken home for lovings and treats while Cameron posted his story to social media and called around local news agencies to claim his 15 minutes of fame.

“I could have died,” he told local reporters.
