Wales Rugby Supporters Guide to the RWC

Posted on

Luckily, I’ve managed to get to Japan a little bit early in order to give you a guide to what to expect if you’re coming to the World Cup.

Some of the stadiums are amazing. A few are a bit small but I’m sure that they will have a good atmosphere. Can’t believe the Yokohoma one is named after John Lennon’s wife though. Who’d have thought?

I’ve done some digging and I can confirm that your Arriva Trains Wales Railcard is valid over here and Japan Railways have promised to make you feel at home by not putting on enough services or staff immediately after each game.

Pop up the Tokyo Skytree if you have time. On a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji. It’s a bit like popping up the Meridian Tower in Swansea for a view of Kilvey Hill only better.

The Ginza district isn’t, unfortunately, an area of gin bars and is actually a district of shops for all things animé. (Think Pokemon for grown-ups). I made the mistake, took a taxi there and came back with 3 comics, a DVD and a hole in my bank balance.

Fukuoka is well worth a visit. It’s a lovely city, but I just don’t get it. Like, who’s Oka? What did they do wrong? Why don’t the people who named the city like them?

Sapporo is the beer capital of Japan. World Rugby had to confirm that beer was actually sold in Japan before the 2019 World Cup was awarded to the land of the rising sun. Not wanting to take any chances however, Brains have exported 40,000 barrels of its Best ready for the red invasion.

Osaka is renowned for its street food. Noodles and sushi being a favourite. Don’t worry though, Swansea is twinned with Osaka and a select number of traders from Swansea market are already here setting up stalls of cockles, laverbread and Welsh Rarebit.

Finally, I’ve thought of some key phrases you might need. You can thank me later!

Shwmae – Kon’nichiwa
Cwtch – Yorisou
Rugby – Ragubī
Referee – Shinpan
One beer please – Bīru ippai kudasai
You can stick your chariot up your arse – Sensha o ichibanshita ni oku koto ga dekimasu
