Devastating news for Olympic fans as Merthyr Tydfil Olympic team announced this lunchtime that they will not be travelling to Tokyo for the Olympics.

“It wouldn’t be fair for us to compete with so many countries already not in attendance,” said marathon hopeful and team leader Wyn Amedal. “It’s hard as many of us have been training hard for a couple of weeks now.”

Merthyr has medal hopes in the marathon, 100m sprint and the cycling. What’s worse is that the £75 sponsorship from Sports Wales has already been spent on a planning meeting in the pub on Saturday.

Wyn continued:

“As an alternative, we are going to host a mini ‘It’s a Knockout’ tournament down the Rec next Sunday and we are hoping that the Ystrad and Llangefni teams will join us.
