Chinese tourist mistakes Port Talbot for Mount Doom

Mount-Doom

A Chinese tourist visiting Wales for the first time has mistaken the picturesque town of Port Talbot for Mount Doom in Mordor.

Tit Fat Hip was heading west down the M4 at night when he first saw what he thought was the fictional mountain.

He told WalesOnCraic:

“I couldn’t believe my eyes. I’m a big fan of the Lord of the Rings and I always thought that they filmed it in New Zealand. But I was on my way to Llanelli and it was late at night when I came down the M4 in my hire car. It was just there in front of me. I told my wife to start taking photos but she was still back home in China so she never heard me. I nearly crashed the car seven times as I drove by. It was only when I finally got to Llanelli that the people there told me what a daft knob I was – and that it was only the steel works. You would have thought I’d have learnt my lesson after I mistook Cardiff’s City Hall for the White House last week. I’ll be more careful in the future.”

The Port Talbot Tourist Association said:

“We have millions of people visit Port Talbot every year and he’s not the first person to mistake our lovely town for Mount Doom. We even had one tourist from Japan last year who mistook our town for the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. It’s something we’re very proud of.”
